About the event
This is a combination in-person and on-line workshop and demonstration. You may partisipate either virtually or physically in the BOOKFORGE bindery studio.
Commonplace as early as the 14th century and popular through the 17th century, this flexible bookbinding method was often used to cover less valuable or common books. This workshop explores the variations and techniques of crafting and decorating these most durable library bindings.
The cover is made with a single piece of vellum or alternative material, folded around the text block, the front and back covers being folded double.
The quires are sewn onto cords such as alum-tawed thongs and the sewing supports would be laced into the vellum cover.
The thongs would also often be used at the fore-edge of the covers to create a closure or tie.
During the lecture portion of the workshop, we will discuss the history of traditionally made Long Stitch bindings and modern sympathetic techniques.
The instructor will introduce the standard language and vocabulary of the bookbinder and the trade. Bookbinding tools and materials will also be covered above and beyond the topic of Long Stitch (Limp Vellum Bindings).
All tools (only in-person) and materials are included in the cost of the workshop, including the alternative material used for the covering of the book.
Students will leave the workshop with a fundamental understanding of bookbinding, the knowledge and experience of creating Long Stitch and Link Stitch (Limp Vellum) Bindings, the history of the structure, and one hand-bound combination of Long Stitch and Link Stitch Binding of their own creation.
